Covid-19 update
There were 341 new Covid-19 cases, 284 recoveries and 5 deaths from Covid-19 in Madeira since the previous Madeira Situation Report, which was published a week ago. Once again, there was a big increase in the number of new cases, most of which were cases of local transmission. There were 3 deaths from Covid-19 on Tuesday, a tragic figure that had not been recorded since February 10th. On Wednesday, there were 38 new Covid-19 cases (6 imported cases – 3 from the UK, 2 from Germany and 1 from Sweden & 32 cases of local transmission) and 31 recoveries. The number of patients in hospital was 11, 2 of whom in intensive care.
On Thursday, there were 51 new Covid-19 cases (4 imported cases – 1 from France, 1 from Saint Vincent and The Grenadines, 1 from the UK and 1 from the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region & 47 cases of local transmission) and 58 recoveries. The number of patients in hospital increased to 14, 3 of whom were in intensive care.
On Friday, there were 63 new Covid-19 cases (all cases of local transmission) and 39 recoveries. The number of patients in hospital increased to 19, 5 of whom were in intensive care.
On Saturday, there were 30 new Covid-19 cases (5 imported cases – 1 from Austria, 1 from Spain, 1 from the UK, 1 from Venezuela and 1 from Northern Region & 25 cases of local transmission), 35 recoveries and 1 death. A 48 year-old female patient, who had pre-existing conditions, died from Covid-19 at Hospital Dr. Nélio Fonseca. The number of patients in hospital increased to 26, 5 of whom were in intensive care.
On Sunday, there were 73 new Covid-19 cases (6 imported cases – 3 from Austria, 2 from the UK and 1 from Switzerland & 67 cases of local transmission), 38 recoveries and 1 death. A 75 year-old male patient, who had pre-existing conditions, died from Covid-19 at Hospital Dr. Nélio Fonseca. The number of patients in hospital increased to 30, 5 of whom were in intensive care.
On Monday, there were 36 new Covid-19 cases (6 imported cases – 1 from Austria, 1 from Germany, 1 from Israel and 3 from the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region & 30 cases of local transmission) and 38 recoveries. The number of patients in hospital and in intensive care remained the same as the day before.
And on Tuesday, there were 50 new Covid-19 cases (7 imported cases – 3 from the Czech Republic, 1 from Austria, 1 from France, 1 from the Netherlands and 1 from Northern Region & 43 cases of local transmission), 45 recoveries and 3 deaths. Two male patients (aged 84 and 79) and a female patient (aged 95) died from Covid-19 at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça. They had pre-existing conditions. This was the deadliest day from Covid-19 in the Region since February 10th. The number of patients in hospital decreased to 27, 5 of whom were in intensive care.
There were 407 active cases on Tuesday, of which 36 had been imported while the other 371 cases had been a result of local transmission. As of Tuesday, there had been 12,804 cases, 12,314 recoveries and 83 deaths. As of Tuesday, there were 54 patients in isolation in a dedicated hotel, 326 patients in isolation in their own accommodation and 22 patients in hospital, 5 of whom in intensive care. On the same day, there were 130 suspected cases under epidemiological investigation and analysis, which were all linked to patients who tested positive for Covid-19, to calls made to the SRS24 helpline, to referrals by SESARAM (Madeira Regional Health Service) and to airport screening.
Also on the same day, were 34,933 travellers under monitoring by the health authorities. Monitoring is being carried out through the ‘MadeiraSafe’ app. There were also 459 people, who had contact with positive cases, being monitored by the health authorities of several Madeira municipalities and of Porto Santo.
As for Covid-19 testing on passengers who had arrived at Funchal and Porto Santo airports, 319,812 samples had been collected until Tuesday (at 15h30). As for Covid-19 rapid antigen tests, a total of 416,895 tests had been carried out by November 7th, 342,684 of which as part of mass testing campaigns. By Tuesday, 694,582 samples from RT-PCR tests had been processed in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
The SRS 24 helpline (Regional Health Service – 800 24 24 20) received 766 calls from Wednesday to Tuesday. Overall, it had received 67,777 calls.
The Covid-19 mental health helpline (Linha de Acompanhamento Psicológico da Direção Regional de Saúde – 291 212 399 – available every day from 09h00 to 21h00), which was set up to provide emotional and mental support to anyone in Madeira received 15 calls from Wednesday to Tuesday. Overall, it has received 3,933 calls.

Opening hours of vaccination centres for administration of the 3rd dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
The vaccination campaign for the administration of the 3rd dose of the Covid-19 is underway. The 3rd dose of the Covid-19 vaccine is being administered to people aged 18 or older, who had been inoculated with the 2nd dose of the vaccine more than 6 months ago. No appointment is required. Anyone interested simply has to turn up at any vaccination centre. In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the Covid-19 vaccine can be administered to any person aged 12 or older.

Covid-19 vaccination update
s of November 14th, 15,821 Covid-19 booster shots had been administered in the Region, 2,175 of which to healthcare professionals. This means around 35% of healthcare professions from the Madeira Health Service have been inoculated with Covid-19 booster shots.
Rules on visiting patients at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça
He recent increase in Covid-19 cases has led to the implementation of stronger safety measures at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça. From November 15th, only 1 relative is allowed to visit a patient who is hospitalised in the general ward, while the special rules for visiting patients in specialist wards will remain the same. These are in addition to the need to present proof of a negative Covid-19 test.
The Madeira Health Service (SESARAM) stressed that there is no Covid-19 outbreak at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça. It explained that an RT-PCR Covid-19 test is carried out on every patient who becomes hospitalised. The same test is then carried out between the 5th and 7th day of hospitalisation. Whenever a hospitalised patient tests positive for Covid-19, the Contingency Plan is implemented, which includes moving the infected patient to a dedicated area.
New Navy patrol vessel arrived in Madeira
NRP Sines, a Viana do Castelo-class offshore patrol vessel, arrived in the Region on Saturday. She is replacing NRP Douro, which has returned to Lisbon after a 4 month-long deployment. NRP Sines’s commanding officer is Captain-Lieutenant Ester Eunice Pereira Lopes. The vessel has a crew of 53 sailors (14 officers, 9 sergeants and 30 enlisted). This deployment will reinforce the Navy’s presence in the Region, and strengthen sea patrols and potential search and rescue missions

Madeira Regional Government and Legislative Assembly reaction to the death of FW de Klerk
he Madeira Regional Government and the Madeira Legislative Assembly reacted to the death of Frederik Willem de Klerk, the former president of South Africa. They sent their condolences to de Klerk’s family and friends, and highlighted his role in South Africa’s history and the Nobel Peace Prize he had been awarded in 1993. José Manuel Rodrigues, the Speaker of the Madeira Legislative Assembly, also pointed out that de Klerk had been the president of a country that hosts a large Madeiran diaspora.
