Brief Covid-19 update

On July 4th, it was announced that there had been just 1 new Covid-19 case (1 non-teaching member of staff) in the Region’s schools in the previous days.

Doca do Cavacas Swimming Complex reopened for swimming

Doca do Cavacas Swimming Complex has reopened for swimming. The all-clear was given after testing on the water had been carried out by the Regional Health Directorate (Direção Regional da Saúde). The beach had been closed on June 29th after water pollution levels had reached a level that required it to be temporarily closed. Further water testing confirmed that the water was safe enough for swimming to be allowed again.

Two more community defibrillators available in Porto Santo

Two Automatic External Defibrillators were licensed by the Municipality of Porto Santo, under the coordination of the Madeira Civil Protection Service, as part of the Automatic External Defibrillator Program. One defibrillator will be placed outside the Porto Santo Municipal Building (town hall), and another will be placed at Fontinha Beach.

Sour Cherry and Regional Confectionery Show in Curral das Freiras

Another edition of the Sour Cherry and Regional Confectionery Show (Festa da Ginja) is taking place this week 8th-10th July) at the Community Centre of Curral das Freiras. It will have food and drink stalls, with the highlight being the sour cherry liqueur (ginjinha).

Shellfish Festival in Câmara de Lobos

This year’s Shellfish Festival is taking place in Câmara de Lobos (next to the pier) from the 15th to the 24th of July. Its opening hours will be from 12h00 to 15h00, and from 19h00 to 23h00. Visitors will be able to try shellfish dishes such as seafood rice, oysters, clams, lobster, prawns, etc.

The Municipality of Câmara de Lobos informed there will be a water supply disruptions affecting the following areas:

Brief Covid-19 update

There was an average of 74 hospitalised Covid-19 patients per day, and an average of 2 patients in the Covid-19 intensive care unit per day.

There were 14 deaths from June 20th to June 26th. There had been a total of 334 deaths.

On June 28th, it was announced that there had been 2 new Covid-19 cases in the Region’s schools in the previous 24 hours (2 non-teaching member of staff).

 Herbert Jesus, the Regional Health Director (Diretor Regional da Saúde), expects the use of face masks in public transport to remain mandatory, as a precautionary measure.

First Monkeypox case in Madeira

On June 28th, the Regional Health Directorate (Direção Regional da Saúde) confirmed the first case of Monkepox infection in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The first patient is an adult male who had recently traveled to the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region. He is being monitored by the Madeira Health Service. All appropriate infection control measures have been implemented. An epidemiological investigation is under way.

Individuals with rashes with blisters, along with a high temperature, a headache, backache, muscle aches, swollen glands, shivering (chills), exhaustion must abstain from close physical contact and seek medication attention.

Any suspected cases of Monkeypox infection must be reported to the following Madeira Health Service hotline: 8000 24 24 200 (Linha SRS 24)

Parts of Estrada Monumental to be closed to traffic

The Municipality of Funchal informed the Estrada Monumental stretch between Caminho do Arieiro and the roundabout at Estrada da Vitória will be closed to traffic (residents, public transport, hotels, and loading and unloading are exempted) on July 5th, 6th and 7th, from 09h00 to 17h00, as a result scheduled work on trees.

Water supply disruption

The Municipality of Funchal informed there will be a water supply disruption today, from 14h00 to 02h00, at Rua Velha da Ajuda, as a result of scheduled work on the water supply network. The following areas will be affected:

Brief Covid-19 update

On June 19th, there were 95 patients hospitalised in the general Covid-19 unit (22 non-vaccinated, 1 vaccinated with the first shot, 72 fully vaccinated), and 1 hospitalised patient in the Covid-19 intensive care unit (fully vaccinated). As for the age of the hospitalised patients who were in the general Covid-19 unit, 27 are aged 18-65 and 68 are 65 or older. The patient in intensive care is aged 65 or older.

There were 15 deaths from June 13th to June 19th. There had been a total of 320 deaths.

On June 21st, it was announced that there had been 8 new Covid-19 cases in the Region’s schools in the previous 24 hours (5 students, 2 teachers and 1 non-teaching member of staff).

Extra Porto Santo ferry services on June 26th

Porto Santo Line informed there will be extra ferry services to and from Porto Santo on June 26th. This is intended to encourage more visitors to Porto Santo during the weekend of St. John’s festival.

 The timetable of the ferry services on that day will be:

Funchal – Porto Santo: 08h00 & 16h30 (extra)

Porto Santo – Funchal: 13h00 (extra) & 20h000

To amend the booking (free of charge), the customers must do so by visiting one of the Porto Santo Line branches:

– Estrada Monumental, number 175C, Funchal (open from Monday to Sunday – 09h-12h30 & 14h00-20h00)

Madeira Airport to have flights to 26 countries during the summer

Miguel Albuquerque, the President of the Madeira Regional Government, revealed that Madeira Airport will have flights to to 26 countries during the summer. This a 73% increase in comparison to 2019 (11 countries). There will be flights to 60 airports, an increase of 20% (10 more airports than in 2019). He has no doubts that everything is in place for the Region to benefit from a good summer season.

Wizzair started flights to Madeira

Wizzair’s first flight to Madeira took place on June 18th. The aircraft, carrying about 240 passengers, laded in Funchal after 19h00.

Brief Covid-19 update

On June 13th, there were 93 patients hospitalised in the general Covid-19 unit (27 non-vaccinated, 2 vaccinated with the first shot, 57 fully vaccinated, 7 vaccinated with a booster shot), and 2 hospitalised patients in the Covid-19 intensive care unit. (1 non-vaccinated, 1 fully vaccinated). As for the age of the hospitalised patients who are in the general Covid-19 unit, 1, is aged 0-17, 22 are aged 18-65 and 70 are 65 or older. The patients in intensive care is aged 65 or older.

On June 14th, it was announced that there had been 13 new Covid-19 cases in the Region’s schools in the previous 24 hours (8 students, 2 teachers and 3 non-teaching staff).

First ever Covid-19 outbreak in Madeira prison

The only prison in the Madeira Region faced its first ever Covid-19 outbreak. As of June 6th, there had been 45 Covid-19 cases among the inmates. They are in prophylactic isolation, under monitoring by the prison’s medical staff, and have their own period of outdoor time in isolation from the remaining inmates.

There will be a water supply disruption today, from 09h00 to 12h00, at Rua Passeio da Quinta do Salvador, as a result of planned work on the water supply chain. The following areas will be affected:
