Regional Civil Protection Service willing to deploy personnel to Türkiye and Syria

On Monday, the Regional Civil Protection Service (Serviço Regional de Protecção Civil) expressed its willingness to deploy some of its personnel to help in the EU Civil Protection Mechanism’s rescue and aid missions to the areas that were affected by the February 5th earthquake that affected Türkiye and Syria.

The ANEPC (Autoridade Nacional de Emergência e Protecção Civil) expressed its gratefulness to the Madeiran offer and highlighted its capabilities that can be useful in ANEPC missions.

New Civil Protection vehicle for Ponta do Sol

The Municipality of Ponta do Sol purchased an all-terrain vehicle for the recently-created Municipal Civil Protection Service (Serviço Municipal de Protecção Civil – SMPC). The vehicle cost nearly €100,000 and will be useful for logistical support, operational command, search and rescue operations, and the protection of people, goods and the environment.

New discount on Binter flights

Binter launched a new campaign of discounts on flights between Madeira and the Canary Islands. The campaign will be in place for flights that will take place from April 13th to June 15th. It will
enable passengers to book flights for a minimum of €64. These flights must be booked until February 20th. Bookings can be made on Binter’s website (www.binter.pt), by phone (291 290 129) or through a travel agency.

Water supply disruption

There will be a water supply disruption on February 9th, from 14h00 to 18h00, in the Parish of Tabua (Municipality of Ribeira Brava), due to scheduled work on the supply network in order to

Empresa de Electricidade da Madeira (Madeira power supplier) announced there will be power cuts due to scheduled work on the electricity supply network. These cannot be postponed and will take place in the following days and places:

Home rental prices increased 0.6% in January

The price for renting homes in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased 0.6% in January, comported to the previous month. Each square metre cost an average of €10.90. The increase in the rental price was higher in Funchal, with an increase of 2.1% and a cost of €11.70 per square metre. The 3-month increase was by 2.9%.

Bone fragments found in São Jorge

Bone fragments were found on Sunday morning on a stream in the parish of São Jorge (Municipality of Santana). The authorities suspect they could be the remains of Benoit Way, a 35-year old French tourist who went missing in September 2022 while hiking. Samples will be sent to the Portuguese mainland in order to identify the remains.

Funding for the future hospital

Miguel Albuquerque (President of the Madeira Regional Government) announced that the Region has enough funds to cover the share it is required to pay for the building of the new hospital in the Region (Hospital Central e Universitário da Madeira – Madeira Central and University Hospital).

Madeira is the region with 3rd highest probability of being the victim of road accident

An investigation carried out by HelloSafe Portugal found that Madeira is the Region with the 3rd highest probability of being the victim of a road accident. The investigation analysed the data on road accidents that happened in 2022. There were an average of 4 road accidents with victims per hour in Portugal in the first 9 months of 2022.

13 drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol

The Regional Command of the Madeira Public Security Police (Comando Regional da Polícia de Segurança Pública da Madeira) informed that 13 arrests were made for driving under the influence of alcohol during several patrol missions that took place between January 13th and 19th. In addition, 4 people were arrested in Funchal for driving without a licence, 1 person was arrested in Santana for driving while the driving licence had been apprehended, and 1 person in Funchal was banned from driving  for 12 hours.

Cruise ship port calls

Two cruise ships carrying more than 6,000 passengers docked in Funchal on January 17th. The “Mein Schiff 4” cruise ship carried 2,478 passengers and 903 crew members, while the “Norwegian Sun” cruise ship carried 1,856 passengers and 954 crew members.

Two cruise ships carrying nearly 4,000 passengers docked in Funchal on January 24th. The “Borealis” cruise ship is carrying 956 passengers and 611 crew members, and will be docked for 26 hours. The “AIDAsol” cruise ship is carrying 1,767 passengers and 595 crew members, and will be docked for 37 hours.

Water supply disruption

There will be a water supply disruption today (January 25th) in the parish of Câmara de Lobos (Caldeira, Rancho, and Ribeira da Alforra) due to scheduled work on the water supply management system. It will start at 14h00 and finish at 18h00.. All care will be taken to minimise the inconvenience caused by this disruption.

Traffic restrictions due to Athletics Race

There will some traffic restrictions in Funchal on December 22nd, from 20h00 to 21h30, due to the athletics race (“X Grande Prémio Arca DAjuda”) that will be taking place. These restrictions will be in the following areas:

– Rua do Vale da Ajuda

– Caminho dos Piornais

– Rua dos Piornais

– Praça da Assicom

– Avenida Mário Soares (on the way up between Praça da Assicom and Rua dos Piornais)

– Rua do Amparo

– Rampa dos Piornais

– Caminho do Amparo

– Rua Velha da Ajuda

– Rua João Paulo II

– Rua da Casa Branca (on the stretch between Travessa do Valente and Rua João Paulo II)

– Travessa do Valente

– Estrada Monumental (on the stretch between Travessa do Valente and Praça da Assicom)

The Police (PSP) will be in charge of the restrictions and may allow vehicles to be driven on the road junctions if it is safe to do so. Drivers are asked to comply with the relevant road signs and with the instructions given by police officers.

Changes in bus services during “Noite do Mercado”

Horários do Funchal (Madeira bus company) announced that on December 23rd, the bus services available will have the same timetable that is applicable on weekdays. However, there will some changes at the start and end of some services. These are some of the changes:

– Bus services 05 and 05A (Carreira 05 and Carreira 05A) will be operated until 17h00.

– Bus service 42 (Carreira 42) will be operated through Rua 31 de Janeiro.

– Bus service number 2 (Carreira 02) will be operated every 30 minutos from 23h30 until 02h00 (December 24th).

– Bus services that were not mentioned will depart from the usual bus stops.

Some changes will start from 19h00 due to “Noite do Mercado”. Travelers are advised to the check the company’s Facebook page and website.

On the map that is available on the website shown below, “Terminal de Chegada/Partida” means “Point of Arrival/Departure”.

Tourist train back in São Vicente

The tourist train is be back in the Municipality of São Vicente, as part of a tour of nativity scenes (Cribs Route – Rota dos Presépios). Visitors will be able to travel on this train on January 7th and 8th, January 14th and 15th, and January 21st and 22nd). Each train will depart at 19h00 in São Vicente and its arrival will be at around 21h00. Fares can be purchased onboard the train and will cost €5. Children up to the age of 5 will be able to travel free of charge.

Portuguese Air Force airlifted patient from Spain

On December 18th, the Portuguese Air Force airlifted two patients for urgent hospital treatment. The first patient was airlifted from Spain to the Madeira archipelago. This was a rare event in which a patient was airlifted from Spain to Portugal. On the way back, the Air Force airlifted a patient from Madeira to the Mainland.
