68 accidents in hiking trails and levadas
It was announced that so far, there have been 68 accidents at hiking trails and levadas (small irrigation canals that serve to redirect water from one area to another) across Madeira. This has led to the intervention of the regional emergency services. As such, firemen and women are able to receive additional training to enable them to carry out rescue work at hiking trails.
Hikers are strongly advised to have prior knowledge of the route, to take the right equipment (flashlights, the right clothing and footwear), to consider if they are afraid of heights and are not used to long walks, and to be aware that the hike could take a long time and be challenging.
Road closure
The tunnel that leads to the Port of Funchal and connects the roundabouts at Quinta Magnolia and at the Port of Funchal will be closed to traffic on August 17th, from 22h00 to 06h00 (following day). This will be due to scheduled maintenance work.
Power cut
Empresa de Electricidade da Madeira (Madeira power supplier) announced there will be power cuts due to scheduled work on the electricity supply network. These cannot be postponed and will take place in the following days and places:
BOAVENTURA
August 17th – 09h00 to 09h05 & 16h55 to 17h00 (TODAY)
– Lombo do Urzal
– Achada da Madeira
– Estrada da Falca
However, power could be restored during the time frame mentioned above. So, for safety purposes, it should be assumed that there will be power at any time during this period of time.
