The division comprises the Funchal squadron covering the geographical area of Funchal, the Traffic Unit; Traffic Unit; Criminal Investigation Unit; and the Fiscal an intervention unit
The 1st Precinct of Funchal seeks to ensure public order, tranquility, security and protection of people and their property, always respecting their rights, freedoms and guarantees.
To achieve this plan, it carries out patrolling on foot and by car, 24 hours a day, throughout the city of Funchal. These patrols are responsible for preventing the occurrence of criminal offenses and also for responding promptly to requests where urgent action is required to protect and assist citizens and to defend and preserve belonging s & assets in danger, By causes from human action or from nature.
In addition to the above mentioned aspects, the 1st Precinct of Funchal implements in its area of responsibility a policing of proximity, where the police agents work in the same zone, permanently and proactively with the citizens, to discover and solve their problems, working in Partnership with the community.
The Traffic Unit as the main propose to provide a road safety environment to all citizens in Madeira. It comprises the following main responsibilities:
The Criminal Investigation Division has the responsibility to investigate crimes that are reported to them directly, or through other units. It supports and develops field investigations run by the prosecutor office; they are also responsible for preventive undercover patrolling, promoting a fast response when a criminal incident occurs. This technical unit also have the main mission to collect, preserve and analyse evidence at crime scenes.
The Rapid Intervention Teams essentially do the following: Patrolling of Sensitive Urban Areas; Intervention in situations of alteration / restoration of public order; Standby support / intervention in Sports Complexes; Support to ensure fulfilment of search warrants and others; Support to police patrol car units in more complex situations and Support to other police units in festive events and local traditional fairs.
The Police Surveillance Brigade essentially does the following: Supervision of licenses and other administrative obligations of commercial establishments; Supervision in the field of private security; Other administrative inspections such as pets, street vending, scrap metal, etc and Support for inspection in the field of weapons and explosives.

On a daily basis, the Police Division of Funchal, through its subunits, ensures the safety of more than 110,000 residents in the county, as well as the number of tourists who visit us from the “four corners of the world”.
