Covid-19
In the seven days from Friday 2nd December until Thursday the 8th of December there were 44 new positive cases of Covid-19 registered in the Azores, and a total of 1,331 tests performed. 75 people have recovered, no new deaths have been recorded in the last week with the total at 120. There are 82 active cases, 31 fewer than the previous week.
There are 7 patients in the region’s hospitals as of 9th of December with Covid, two of which are in hospitalbecause of Covid. There are no patients in the ICU.
121679 people in the region have had Covid, that’s over 50% of the population.
Government of the Azores ensures that space port in Santa Maria advances in 2023
The undersecretary of the Presidency of the Government of the Azores, Pedro Faria e Castro, assured that the project for the construction of a space port on the island of Santa Maria will advance in 2023.
Azores register an increase in dependencies among young people
The Azores have seen an increase in dependence on psychoactive substances among younger generations, especially on the island of São Miguel.
The Azores have unfortunately had very high numbers in terms of consumption of psychoactive substances. The new psychoactive substances have a very big impact in the region.
Clélio Meneses said that “prevention” is the executive’s main focus but acknowledged that there is also a need for intervention in treatment, risk reduction and damage minimization, appealing to the collaboration of society as a whole.
“We need everyone’s involvement in prevention, but also in ending the stigmatization of this type of situation because, in addition to the painfulness of the immediate and direct consequences of consumption, there is another added painfulness of stigmatization and social exclusion”, he stressed.
