Madeira Tourism Secretary letter to the British Ambassador
Eduardo Jesus (Madeira Tourism Secretary) wrote a
letter to Christopher Sainty, the British Ambassador to Portugal, explaining the importance of an air corridor to Madeira. He shared the Regional Government’s concern in ensuring public health by containing the progression of the
Covid-19 pandemic, reducing its contagion and expressed support for all measures needed to achieve these.
He specifically asked the British authorities to consider Madeira’s unique situation when deciding to introduce air corridors that exempt British tourists from quarantine after their return from abroad. He explained the epidemiological
situation in Madeira is not comparable to the situation in the Portuguese mainland and in other European regions and countries.
He also mentioned the Region’s 92 cases, 90 recoveries and absence of Covid-19 deaths and highlighted the 2 cases that were identified through testing in Funchal Airport. He added that the Regional Government has made several decisions
on Madeira’s tracing and sanitary safety measures, the use of PPE, social distancing guidelines and the rigorous sanitary control that was introduced in the Region’s airports (temperature measuring, an epidemiological questionnaire and
Covid-19 testing). He ended the letter by saying Madeira would like to continue to enjoy the trust of British citizens, as shown by the number of British airports with direct flights to the Region: Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle,
Edinburgh, Birmingham, Glasgow, East Midlands, London Stansted.

The European Commission approved a financial support package worth €40M, to
