Covid-19: Turismo do Algarve estimates 74million euros loss of revenue with MotoGP without audience

The president of Turismo do Algarve today estimated at 74 million euros the loss of direct revenue for the region, due to the absence of an audience at the Portuguese Grand Prix of MotoGP, in Portimão.The Portuguese race, the 14th and final round of the world championship on motorcycling, will close the season on November 22, a week after the Grand Prix of the Valencian Community. According to João Fernandes, president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), “there was an estimated revenue of around 80 million euros, but without the presence of people, that revenue should not exceed six million”.

“With the people who are part of the MotoGP motorcycle teams, journalists, people from the organization and who are external to the region, there is a significant impact in terms of accommodation of about 21 thousand overnight stays, vehicle rental, food and consumption, estimating if the value of six million euros ”, he indicated. For João Fernandes, although the revenue is a contribution to the region, “it is far from the 80 million that were estimated to be held for the event with the presence of an audience”.

However, the person in charge of Turismo do Algarve considers that “all is not lost, because what is most important in this event is the ability to gain notoriety for the country and a tourist destination like the Algarve, namely through the television broadcast that arrives to more than 400 million households worldwide”.

State of Emergency forces the postponement of the Casinos do Algarve Rally

The Casinos do Algarve Rally, proves that it closes the Portuguese Rally Championships, and of which the South Rally Championship is also part, which would take place in the municipalities of Lagoa, Lagos, Monchique and Portimão in the next days of 14 and 15 November , had to be postponed due to the implementation of the State of Emergency in Portugal, due to the fight against the covid-19 pandemic. In a statement, Clube Automóvel do Algarve informs that the favorable opinion issued by the Regional Directorate of Health of the Algarve was revoked yesterday, stating that: “a sporting event of this dimension, in addition to being able to increase the number of cases in the region even more, would still occupy essential time of the security forces and other professionals and they are essential today in the prevention of covid-19 “.

In this way, and given the importance that the rally presents for the discussion of the title of national champion, FPAK and Clube Automóvel do Algarve will propose to Solverde – Casinos do Algarve and the local authorities involved, a new date for the event to take place during the next month of December, “provided that the sanitary conditions are met for its safe execution”, underlines the organization, similar to what happened with other events in the last months for the Portuguese Rally Championship.
