On 21^st October 2016 the Regional command of the PSP Madeira, reported that in the context of various operations of crime prevention developed by police division of Funchal, they had arrested and identified various individuals for various crimes and contraventions.

According to the statement,  PSP Funchal conducted highly visible and prevention operations aimed at educational establishments in the municipality, during which they arrested two individuals, students, aged between 17 to 19 years, on suspicion of drug trafficking.

This police action resulted in the seizure of 95 single doses of products suspected of being “Pollen of hash” and 53 euros in cash.

In another operation, carried out on 22^nd and 23rd October, in Funchal in coordination with the  criminal investigation unit of Câmara de Lobos and the police intervention unit of Funchal, the PSP detained 4 individuals, three male and a female, aged between 19 and 30, all residents of the municipality of Funchal, heavily indicted fordrug trafficking.

This action of the PSP, resulted in the seizure of about 775 single doses of product suspected of being “hash”.

In the wake of the procedural steps, particularly in the context of house searches, it was possible to seize more than 16 euros in cash, two cars and 7 items of telecommunications equipment.

All detainees were made defendants and submitted to the competent judicial authorities, resulting measures of constraint that ranged from the term of identity and residence and biweekly presentations, whilst the criminal case continues.

The Regional command of PSP Madeira recommends that all citizens if and when they are aware of suspicious situations or related to the practice of illicit activities, contact as soon as possible by any means, any station of PSP in order to trigger Police action in good time and for the sake of a better service to the community.

The GNR Territorial Madeira Command carried out a series of operations, during the week of 21 to 27 October, which were aimed at monitoring the coast and the territorial sea and the prevention, detection and investigation of tax and customs offenses, protection of nature and environment. During the operation they registered the following operational data:

Seizures: 140 liters of alcoholic beverages by irregular release for consumption.

General supervision: 27 notices of administrative offense, highlighting 11 in the outstanding goods regulation; 3 concerning animal welfare; and one concerning excise duty.

On 3^rd November the GNR Funchal seized in Câmara de Lobos area, 1281 euros in cash and illegal gambling listings involving values ​​amounting to 20 thousand euros.

As part of a  an operation to combat operation to illegal gambling, the GNR checked many shops in Câmara de Lobos village, and seized the game explorer and betting listings and accounting listings for the commonly known as the “Jogo do Bicho” (“Critter Game”) involving values ​​amounting to 20 thousand euros, and seized 1,281 euros in cash.

They were also identified three individuals as scouts / recruiters for illegal gambling. The material seized will be sent to the Santa Misericordia de Lisboa and the amount of cash deposited in the bank account of the Department of Santa Misericordia Games Lisbon

Judicial Police have arrest four pharmacists for fraud against the National Health Service in the greater Porto area.

The Judicial Police, through the Northern Board, in investigations of fraud practices to the National Health Service (NHS) undertaken by DIAP Porto have arrested four pharmacists strongly indicted for the crimes of aggravated fraud, corruption, document forgery (aggravated) and computer falsehood.

According to the investigation the criminal activity consisted of a fraudulent scheme of fictitious sale of medicines by issuing bogus prescriptions, so that the contribution rate paid by the State reverted to suspects.

In the course of searches conducted, all in the metropolitan area of Porto, evidence gathered is that the scam amounted to approximately Euro one million in the three pharmacies against the state.

The Judicial Police have arrested  a PSP agente aged 26 years, who was working in the Police Division of Sintra, on suspicion of the practice of kidnapping, extortion and assault.

The action was coordinated with the PSP. He has appeared before the appropriate judicial authority, for application of conditions pending trial. In addition the PSP have commenced a disciplinary process and in this context he has also been suspended from work.

On 2^nd November at 17.45 hrs the Security Division of the Public Transport, Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the Public Security Police, arrested two persons aged 28 and 37 years of age for pickpocketing in the area of Rossio.

Police on patrol duty, were alerted to the movements of pickpockets who have been targeting tourists who visit the Rossio area. They move around taking advantage of the high concentration of tourists. Each pickpocket has a defined role within the group. In this instance they stole from a foreign tourist a wallet containing 350 Euros and various items..

The police intercepted the pair and recovered € 350 in cash and; and a wallet with various documents; The detainees have criminal records for crimes of a similar nature, were present in the Central Instance – Section of Criminal Investigation of Lisbon,  with an application to be held in custody pending trial.

The GNR Coastal Control (UCC) that has been deployed to the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union (FRONTEX), Greece, returned to Portugal on 2^nd November.

The unit was based on the island of Chios – Greece from April 1 and October 31,  with the aim of preventing, detecting and stopping illegal immigration, trafficking in human beings, drug trafficking, helping to safeguard human lives at sea.

The GNR unit travelled 3,061 kilometers on land patrolling actions, and detected a total of 309 migrants.

The GNR Chaves Criminal Investigation unit arrested on 26th October in Chaves municipality, a 45-year-old man for swindling the elderly.

As part of an investigation into various fraud crimes in northeast Transmontano, where the suspect was posing as a city council officer, approaching older people with physical difficulties and precarious conditions. He then enticed them into fictitious contracts for television services, telephone and internet telecommunication operators.

A house search at the residence of the suspect was undertaken, where the GNR seized several documents related to fraud which had been carried out.

The National Republican Guard (GNR), in partnership with CTT – Correios de Portugal, will distribute throughout the national territory 50,000 magnets to help remind the elderly, to adopt security procedures in order not to be victims of crime, particularly violent situations, such as scams, thefts and robberies in their homes.

Many of these people live alone and or in isolated locations.

The high visibility magnetic card the size of a name card, also contains the details of the local GNR and makes it easier, in emergency cases, to contact them.

This is important in supporting and providing security reassurance for this age group.

The Lisbon Metropolitan Command PSP, through the Environmental Protection Brigade (BRIPA), in collaboration with the Nature Conservation Institute and Forestry (ICNF) has undertaken enforcement actions Aimed at environmental protection.

This morning another set of joint enforcement actions, directed at the traders in ivory and other animal substances in commercial areas, located at various points in Lisbon resulted in the seizure of:

41 elephant ivory pieces;

3 turtle parts, and

2 hippopotamus horns.

The actions detected four very serious environmental offenses relating to the organization of conditions, maintenance and updating of the CITES National Register and lack of Certificates CITES (Convention on Species International Trade in Wild Fauna and Flora Wild Endangered), and the amount minimum total fines amounted to 40,000.00 euros.

Illegal trade in ivory and other animal substances is a scourge that has motivated the intervention of different authorities, taking into account the devastating impact this activity has on some species, with the Lisbon Metropolitan Command highly committed to developing surveillance activities under environmental protection and, also, contribute to awakening, increasingly, environmental awareness of citizens.
