On 6th December, the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), at Porto Airport, arrested a national citizen, in compliance with a warrant issued by the Court of Loures.

The 38-year-old from the United Kingdom was taken to the Porto Prison to serve five years’ imprisonment for committing a drug trafficking offense, where he was convicted by a final decision in June. 2007.

The defendant was sentenced to suspended sentence of two years and three months and the second defendant to suspended sentence of two years, both for the practice of pimping.

By a decision handed down by the Court of Coimbra, a couple, a foreign citizen and a national citizen, were convicted..

The Court found that this couple, who operated a former hotel establishment in the district of Coimbra, converted into a space which had be altered and prostitution were practiced. They encouraged women who depended on them for work to carry our prostition in spaces adjacent to the establishment, charging a percentage.

In the course of the investigations, which are the responsibility of the SEF, a number of foreign women were found illegally in the course of various inspections and searches conducted on the spot.

The Judiciary Police, through the Department of Criminal Investigation of Leiria, under investigation by the DIAP of the district of Santarém, conducted an operation that culminated in the location and detention of six men suspected of being responsible for crimes of extortion, qualified robbery, possession of prohibited weapons, drug trafficking, resistance and coercion, assault and threats.

For more than a year, the detainees have been linked to each other with a common purpose of carrying out these crimes resulting in fear in the communities of Entroncamento and Torres Novas, namely merchants and persons conducting businesses.

Using violence or threats of ill-treatment, they obtained tens of thousands of euros by threatening people. In addition, some elements of the gang carried out repeated acts of violence against agents and facilities of public authority.

In the course of the police action a minor was located who had been missing from the host institution since last July.

Those detained, aged between 20 and 47 years, without defined professional occupation, all with a criminal background, will be present to the competent judicial authorities for first judicial interrogation and application of coercion measures considered appropriate.

The GNR Salvaterra de Magos detained on 8th December 2016, a man aged 47 years, for stealing  pine trees, in the locality of Salvaterra de Magos – Magna.

Alerted by the fact that a man was knocking down pine cones, the the GNR visited the location and discovered the man was picking up pine cones from a property near the Magus Dam, which he did not own. Subsequently about 1120 kilograms of pine cones were found in his possession and seized.

The suspect, who has a record for this type of crime was notified to appear in court.

Comment

This is more common at this time of year, the pine cones being packaged and sold as fuel for fires.

On 1st December the GNR Nucleus of Protection of the Environment of Vila Real and Régua detained in Alijó, during an inspection, 11 individuals for hunting outside the allowed hours.

The operation also resulted in the seizure of:  11 hunting guns and 1302 cartridges;

The detainees were accused and notified to appear in court today, December 2.

On 7th December the Metropolitan command of the PSP of Lisbon, 3rd Division arrested a man aged 83 year, for possession of various firearms, weapons, ammunition.

PSP on patrol in Benfica, Lisbon, approached the citizen walking along a public road, who appeared to be behaving suspiciously. He was found to be in possession of various rounds of ammunition.

In subsequent steps a search was undertaken in an annex  of the residence of the individual in a rural area in Benfica, and the following items were found and seized:

  • 13 blank weapons of various characteristics;
  • 2 revolvers. 22 with holster;
  • 1. 25-caliber pistol with charger;
  • 1. 6.35-caliber pistol mm amended to caliber 8 mm with charger and holster;
  • 1 Replica of gun, 6.35 mm;
  • 1 Rifle – class D
  • Several different calibres of ammo.

The Detainee was summoned to appear before the court of Lisbon, for questioning the judicial process.

The GNR Mafra, detained on 2nd December in that locality, two persons aged 58 and 61, for theft from a vehicle.

The action occurred following a report of theft from a vehicle. When the GNR arrived at the scene they found one of the suspects being detained by an off duty GNR agent who was on leave and who assisted the owner of the vehicle. Another suspect fled but was detained by the GNR later.

The vehicle concerned had a broken side window. Next to it was the vehicle used by the suspects, with the stolen items immediately recognized by its owner as well as his wallet with personal documents.

The vehicle of the assailants had its front and rear registration plates changed by stickers, hiding the true numbers. There was another sticker on the inside of the vehicle to change other parts of the vehicle number.

After having consulted the records, it was verified that the suspects were wanted in connection with several thefts in different areas of the country. They used a modus operandi involving the surveillance of people entering and leaving banking institutions, follow them to a place where they parked, and then they broke into the vehicles.

Following the inspection and search of the suspects’ vehicle, a number of tools were also seized used to carry out thefts and break-ins, including screwdrivers, glass breaking devices and gloves for tool handling, as well as the vehicle used.

The detainees will be present at the Judicial Court of the District of Lisbon West in Sintra.

The GNR in addition to its daily operations, carried out a series of operations throughout the country on the weekend of December 3 and 4, aimed at preventing and combating violent crime, providing road traffic control. The results of the operation 138 persons were arrested for the following;

  • 63 for driving under the influence of alcohol;
  • 34 for driving without legal authorization;
  • Eight for theft;
  • Five for trafficking in narcotics;
  • Four for illegal possession of a weapon.

The following items were seized:

  • 602 doses of hashish;
  • Two defence aerosols;
  • Two replica firearm;
  • A weapon;
  • 300 kilos of stolen olives;
  • A vehicle.

 

The Traffic police detected 1720 detected infractions, including:

  • 482 for excess speed;
  • 124 for driving with higher blood alcohol content than allowed by law;
  • 80 for lack of mandatory periodic inspection;

On 2 December, two men, aged 23 and 25, were detained by the military of the Alpiarça Territorial Post because of their illegal stay in the country.The suspects were arranging electricity contracts for the elderly, when they were approached by the military in the town of Alpiarça. When questioned about their identity, the men produced a Spanish tourist visa issued several months ago, which raised suspicions about the illegality of staying in the country.

Contact was made with the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, where it was confirmed that the men did not have any legal documents that would allow their movement and stay in Portugal.

In view of the situation the suspects were constituted defendants, subject to terms of identity and residence and required to appear at SEF in Santarém.

On the 29th of November, 24 men and women from various police commands in the country graduated from the introduction course in sign language (2th edition). The final evaluation and closing ceremony was held at the police training school.

The course lasted two months and involved an intense training program. The objective is increase the number of police men and women prepared to communicate using sign language!
